Exclusive Music Box – David Morales: “I live my life through my art. I love to paint with music. Frankie Knuckles…”

David, what’s your favorite version of “There must be love” and if you can give us a behind the scenes look at the making of this hit, which has reached the number one position on Billboard chart?
My favorite mix is the World MIx. The song was written with the piano line in that mix. I first came up with the track in December of 2014. I made a track to lay at the Ministry of Sound. So I first wrote the track and put the accapella of “Believe” by Jocelyn Brown and the track was one of the big tracks of the night. People went crazy for it. Then I came up with the idea to give it to Janice Robinson to write to. I asked her to write about the pain in her heart. I was in Tokyo when she sent me the idea and I immediately knew right then that is was a special song.

Kings of House’ events have been sold out in recent dates in Asia: can we say that Morales, Vega and Humphries are great artists, not only DJ’s?
Well between the 3 of us there’s alot of history and experience. Me and Vega are still producing and mixing records and Tony is still playing around the world. We never thought that it would become a brand when we first played together.

You play in Italy often: what can you tell the Italian public and is there any unforgettable evening you would like to remember, to tell us about?
Wow….where do I start? I first started coming to Italy in 1992 and it was with Frankie Knuckles. Italy was my first European country.
I was really surprised how enthusiastic the audience was. The first time when we played in Naples I felt like the Rolling Stones in
concert. The people went crazy for us. I’ve had many great moments during the 23 years that I’ve been playing in Italy. I will say that the most unforgettable night was at Echoes in the mid 90’s

When we listened to Frankie Knuckles sets, it was just class. For David Morales, the key word to describe you, is love for the art of DJing and for music: “There must be love”, back to the topic of your hit?
Yes Frankie was all about class. It was like breathing air. I live my life through my art. I love to paint with music.

What is your favorite Italian dish?
That’s easy….tagliatelle bolognese!
